B'shnorkestra performs Global Concertos at Slavonian Hall November 1

Classical Tuesdays in Old Town is excited to bring B'shnorkestra (a 14-piece alternative chamber orchestra) to Old Town Tacoma on November 1 at 7:00pm.

Samantha Boshnack, trumpeter and composer, has written several  "Global Concertos" to showcase the guest soloist’s instrument and tradition. Her B’shnorkestra, conducted by Joshua Kohl, will perform three of these new works for Classical Tuesdays.

B'shnorkestra
The concertos feature Thione Diop on West African talking drum, North Indian vocalist Srivani Jade and Thomas Marriott, American jazz trumpet.
Thione Diop, widely recognized for his powerfully expressive Djembe performances, is descended from an ancestral line of Griot drummers. He performed his Senegalese drums for Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Park in September 2013.
Srivani Jade grew up performing on stage and radio in India and now performs Hindustani Gayaki in both North America and India; she first performed for Classical Tuesdays in October 2008.
Thomas Marriott is highly regarded for his tone and improvisations and has toured world-wide. He performed for Earshot Jazz Festival on October 14 at Tula's Jazz Club.

B'shnorkestra performed the Global Concertos at Poncho Theater on October 24 for Earshot Jazz.

There will be a limited edition, pre-release CD of the premiere performance of Global Concertos for sale at this concert. Global Concertos is also available for pre-order on Bandcamp and iTunes. Check out videos of the premiere at www.bshnorkestra.com.

Classical Tuesdays Experiences Multi-media Event by Loop2.4.3

On Tuesday evening in Slavonian Hall we enjoyed a performance by percussion ensemble Loop 2.4.3 .
Thom Kozumplik, of Brooklyn, and Tacoma Symphony member Denali Williams on percussion were joined by Tom Burnett on keyboard in a live rendition of Kozumplik's Time-Machine_music (which is available to purchase). Album notes explain: "Time-Machine_music is the fourth album from Brooklyn's Loop 2.4.3, and was composed ... by the group's founder, Thomas Kozumplik. The music explores literal and figurative manipulations of time, probing the experience of time from a personal and social perspective. Underlying conflict is juxtaposed with melody, groove, counterpoint, and pulsing waves of sound and emotion, creating a cathartic journey."

Denali Williams and Thom Kozumplik
Their percussion, vocals and keyboard were supported/enhanced by slide projections provided by Seattle-based artist David Derickson.

Classical Tuesdays brings back Loop2.4.3 Percussion Ensemble

"Visceral and satisfying...an astonishing variety of brand-new yet iconic sounds that create a riveting aura, a genuine time warp - all in astonishingly intimate and dynamic, demonstration-quality sound." - Gramophone

Thomas Kozumplik, Loop 2.4.3 Percussion Ensemble
Classical Tuesdays in Old Town is thrilled to welcome back to Slavonian Hall the ensemble Loop 2.4.3!
This percussion ensemble originated in the Puget Sound region and Classical Tuesdays featured these fellows a few times in Old Town Park and in Slavonian Hall early in their career. Loop 2.4.3 (what does that name stand for?!) is flourishing in New York City these days and we are fortunate to catch them on a leg of their West Coast tour. They'll  fill Slavonian Hall with the sounds of their highly touted album "Time Machine_music", enhanced by video projections produced by Seattle-based artist David Derickson.

“It all sounds like part of a well-thought-out tradition. Only the tradition has never existed until now.” – NPR / Fresh Air

Neither snow nor rain...

Not daunted by the threat of rain on Saturday! For the closing act of the Pioneer Days event, Brass Band Northwest performed outdoors on the stage at Old Town Park. A surprising number of hearty North End neighbors came out to enjoy their performance. The band squeezed in 58 minutes of terrific music-making before the cloudburst. All great fun and the brass did sound well outdoors.

We move indoors to Slavonian Hall for the October 11 performance by Loop 2.4.3 Percussion Ensemble. Join us then, Tuesday at 7:00pm!

4 Awesome Accordionists filled Slav Hall

Awesome accordions!
Our 4 guest accordionists wowed a jam-packed Slavonian Hall on Tuesday evening. Toby Hanson gave us a brief overall story of the accordion and played a great variety of styles. Murl Allen Sanders strolled the room, playing jazz and tango. Bonnie Birch serenaded us with her lovely classical touch, and Lyle Schaefer closed the evening with another array of accordion styles. Toby, Murl, Bonnie and Lyle finished with a foot-tapping beer polka. Everyone had a great time. Thanks to Joanne Iverson we have some fun photos of the evening to share.
Murl Sanders strolls the room

Pam and Toby address a full house
And for February's event we look forward to a return performance - back by popular demand - of violinists Maria Sampen & Tim Christie. A bonus is the addition of  new UPS faculty cellist Alistair MacRae; he'll join Maria & Tim in a Beethoven Trio.

The February 9 evening concludes this, our 11th year, in Old Town. And funding and plans are already lining up for our 12th season!

Join us as we celebrate our Classical Tuesdays community!

A huge Thanks! to Dr Nicole Ancich for paying for the printing of programs.
As always, our Thanks! to Slavonian American Society for the use of their great Hall.
And we could not present these free music events without the support of Tacoma Arts Commission, John Connelly Law Offices, Kathy Manke of The Spar, SAI Music Fraternity and Ted Brown Music Store.
Hugs to all!
