Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Tacoma: a conversation between poet and composer

Our next Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Tacoma event, a conversation between 2 artists, is available from February 8 onward at https://www.YouTube.com/classicaltuesdays.

Listen in as Greg Youtz, composer and professor of music at Pacific Lutheran University, and Zhang Er, poet, librettist, and professor at The Evergreen State College, discuss their collaboration on creating an opera - or two!

Together they produced, in 2016, an opera  titled "Fiery Jade" that tells of the lives of women across time and around the world, struggling in times of upheaval. And now, in 2020-21, they have again collaborated to produce a second opera titled "Tacoma Method" which portrays the 1855 expulsion of Chinese laborers, businessmen and families from Tacoma, Washington, led by the mayor. Perhaps our artists will discuss the recurrence of similar issues and events throughout history, especially as observed again in recent times.

Zhang Er, poet, librettist

Greg has stated: I feel my composing is … in service to social/cultural ideas that I think need to be discussed. Although I respect the view that art can be a safe, attractive antidote to the troubles of the world, I am usually more interested in art as a medium for discussion of great ideas, whether they be humorous, deadly serious, or simply wonderfully interesting.

Before penning Shards she worked as a freelance producer for PBS affiliate KCTS9 as well as multiple projects for Puget Sound non-profits organizations such as the Museum of Glass, America’s Car Museum and the Hilltop Artist Program . Her goal has always been to create stories that often don’t get told about real people.

CELESTE REED is an artist native to Tacoma, Washington. She is a dancer, performer, and teacher. Her earliest years of formal dance are influenced by the YMCA and Tacoma School of the Arts. In 2018, Reed earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Modern Dance from the University of Utah. Reed is passionate about the moving body--its functionality and beauty--and its political position in society. She is also deeply interested in the healing powers of movement. This year you might find her teaching dance to Tacoma youth and making work with her fellow creatives. You might also find her dancing in her yard or at a park or on a sidewalk, just because it feels good to move. You'll never find her eating an orange.

So great to feature a live performance for our Classical Tuesdays' audience

Torch ensemble (www.torchthemusic.com/) and filmmaker Scott Kolbo (www.scottkolbo.net) joined Classical Tuesdays October 13 for a live Zoom performance and discussion. They've produced a provocative film accompanied by evocative music. Thanks Brian Chin, Eric Likkel, Steve Schermer, Ben Thomas, Scott Kolbo for a wonderful event! It was great to share a live performance with our audience again.

Coming to Old Town Virtually! October 13, 7:00pm

Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Tacoma is happy to announce that Torch ensemble is performing for us in a virtual discussion and demo followed by a performance of Passages: a Fable in 6 Cycles.

Torch members

TORCH, a Seattle-based contemporary group (Brian Chin, trumpet; Eric Likkel, clarinets; Steve Schermer, bass; Ben Thomas, vibes), performs original and experimental compositions, melding genres as disparate as contemporary classical composition, modern tango and jazz improvisation.

For our October 13th event, Torch collaborates with videographer Scott Kolbo in his multi-media "Passages" which tells an inspiring story of resilience and hope, with a heavy dose of slapstick humor and absurdity. Seattle composer Ken Benshoof describes a Torch performance as  “… cool rhythms, a nice mix of humor and mystery… always felt part of an adventure.”

Please join us and Tacoma musicians in celebrating this vibrant culture!  On September 8, check out Classical Tuesdays at www.youtube.com/classicaltuesdays for:

  • A conversation between Greg Youtz (PLU music faculty and head of the PLU Trinidad and Tobago Study Abroad program), Miho, Sebastian Hernandez (and his young students in the PSD Pans of Steel ensemble), and me, Pamela Ryker (Artistic Director of the Classical Tuesdays series).

I will announce a link (on the Classical Tuesdays website, on Facebook, and via email) a few days before showtime on September 8. Or explore youtube.com/classicaltuesdays  now, before the event!

Classical Tuesdays Jan 14: Canceled, hopefully rescheduled in March.

TORCH is a contemporary chamber music ensemble performing original compositions. Their name references Nobel laureate Thomas Mann's mantra, “Art is the sacred torch that must shed its merciful light into all life's terrible depths."

From TORCH's website:

In 2012, we asked, “Is it possible to create music that could exist as both intellectually rich and crafted with precision while maintaining a palpable groove without using a drummer?” TORCH was born to answer the question with series of self-composed, original programs of music. Rooted in contemporary classical composition, modern tango, and jazz improvisation, TORCH bridges gaps between genres, re-imagines works from master composers of the 20th century, and demonstrates an indie-band model of self-composition as a contemporary chamber music ensemble.

Wine & Song Benefit is Tuesday December 10 at Connelly Law Offices

Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Tacoma is holding our annual Wine & Song Benefit again this year in the lovely Connelly Law Offices. Join us for a chamber recital by our guest artist Brendan  Tuohy, followed by a generous and convivial reception of wines and finger-foods. Those who wish may gather around the piano for a bit of carol singing at the end of the evening.

Connelly Law Offices in Old Town
The silent auction baskets are filling up amazingly! North End shops, theaters and restaurants offered so generously last season, and already a new round of retailers have come forth with attractive items. This is a silent auction, so it is not the focus of the evening, the winning bids will be announced during the wine reception; you will be impressed with what you might pick up.

Our featured guest singer for this Wine & Song is Tacoma tenor Brendan Tuohy accompanied by the wonderful pianist Beth Tankersley. Brendan has planned an evening of art songs centered around the theme of wandering, "I was thinking of a short set of Schubert songs followed by the Vaughan Williams 'songs of travel'. Then lighten the mood a little with 3 or 4 Reynaldo Hahn French songs and then close the evening with Dvorak’s gypsy songs." Sounds delightful to me!
tenor Brendan Tuohy

I most recently heard Brendan sing the lead role in The Tacoma Opera's production of The Elixir of Love downtown at the Rialto Theatre. All the roles were sung beautifully and Brendan truly shone.
